First, choose the simplest tool that works
Apple documents Night Shift with a color-temperature control and custom or sunset-to-sunrise scheduling. If that is all you want, use the built-in feature. Apple source Gloam is an alternative when you want its named presets, 1900K–6500K software range, paired brightness settings, per-app behavior, break prompts, and local usage feedback.
Turn off Night Shift before evaluating Gloam. Two color-temperature systems can compound each other and make the result difficult to attribute or troubleshoot.
Pick the right preset for the task

Start warmer only after the room gets darker. The most sustainable setting is usually the least dramatic one that feels comfortable. A screen should not be the brightest object in the room, but making it so dim that you squint is counterproductive.
Build a schedule that changes gradually
- Open Schedule. Turn on Automatic Schedule.
- Choose location or manual times. On Mac, Gloam requests approximate “when in use” location access to estimate sunrise and sunset. The current app is designed to use that location locally; see the privacy policy. If you decline, enter times yourself.
- Test the transition while awake. Temporarily set a nearby schedule time so you can confirm the display changes.
- Keep mornings neutral. Return to Natural for daylight or color-critical work.

External displays and display resets
Gloam writes gamma ramps to connected displays and re-applies them after sleep, screen wake, lock or unlock, and display-configuration changes. Most ordinary display paths respond, but support is ultimately controlled by the monitor, adapter, and driver.
- One display stays neutral: disconnect and reconnect it, then switch presets to force a visible update.
- Filter disappears after a dock reconnect: wait a moment for the display to finish enumerating, then reselect the preset.
- DisplayLink or unusual adapters: software-driven display paths can ignore standard gamma tables.
- Hardware brightness: Gloam’s PWM-safe hardware-backlight behavior is for the built-in screen; external brightness normally remains under the monitor’s own controls.
Protect color accuracy
A warmer gamma ramp deliberately changes the relationship between red, green, and blue output. That makes it incompatible with judging white balance, skin tone, print soft proofs, UI colors, or brand palettes. Before color-sensitive work:
- Switch to Natural (6500K) or turn the filter off.
- Disable any per-app profile that could reapply warmth to the target app.
- Confirm Night Shift and other filter apps are off.
- Use your calibrated display profile and stable room lighting.
- Re-enable your evening preset only after the review is finished.
Use per-app profiles intentionally
Per-app profiles watch the foreground application’s bundle identifier and apply the assigned preset. A practical setup is Natural for Preview, Photos, Photoshop, Lightroom, or a video editor; Dusk or Evening for a writing app; and no assignment for everything else. Test app switching several times so you understand when the baseline preset returns.

Pair warmth with the things that reduce strain
AAO EyeWiki describes sustained near work, blinking, glare, dry-eye factors, and workstation conditions among contributors to digital eye-strain symptoms. A warm screen does not address all of those factors. AAO EyeWiki Use Gloam's break timer as a cue to look farther away, blink fully, and change posture. The familiar 20-20-20 rule is a memorable prompt, not a precise medical dose.

Troubleshooting checklist
The menu-bar icon is missing
Open Gloam from Applications and check the menu-bar overflow area. The app intentionally runs as an accessory without a normal Dock window.
The screen is too orange
Disable Night Shift or any second filter, then choose Focus or Dusk. Confirm that a per-app profile is not selecting a stronger preset.
The screen is still warm after quitting
Launch Gloam again, choose Natural, then quit normally from the app. Logging out or restarting also restores the system display state.
Location scheduling does not work
Check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services. Or disable location scheduling in Gloam and enter sunrise and sunset manually.
