What “digital eye strain” usually describes

AAO EyeWiki describes digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, as a group of ocular and non-ocular symptoms associated with prolonged visual-display use, including fatigue, dryness, blur, headache, and neck or shoulder discomfort. The same source states that there is no scientific evidence that ordinary computer-screen light damages the eyes and does not recommend special eyewear solely for computer use. That does not make discomfort imaginary; it means “blue-light damage” is not an established explanation for routine screen symptoms.

The five-minute workspace reset

  1. Make text comfortably large. Increase browser zoom or system scaling until you can read without leaning forward or narrowing your eyes.
  2. Set distance and height. Place the main display roughly an arm’s length away, with the top of the useful screen area at or a little below eye level. Individual prescriptions and progressive lenses can require a different position.
  3. Match brightness to the room. A white page should not look like a lamp, and the display should not be so dim that details disappear.
  4. Remove reflections. Rotate the display or shade a window before increasing brightness. Place strong lights beside the screen rather than directly behind it or in your field of view.
  5. Give your body options. Support forearms, keep input devices close, and change position regularly. Neck and shoulder symptoms often travel with eye complaints.

Use breaks to change focus, not just stop typing

The 20-20-20 rule—about every 20 minutes, look roughly 20 feet away for about 20 seconds—is popular because it is easy to remember. It is a behavioral prompt, not a precisely established dose. The important part is relaxing sustained near focus and blinking normally.

Gloam’s break engine can supply the cue, but the benefit comes from what you do during the pause. Adjust the interval if constant interruptions cause you to disable the feature entirely.

Use color temperature for context, not protection claims

Apple and Microsoft describe their built-in warmer-color controls as nighttime comfort features and note that bright blue light in the evening can affect sleep timing. What the evidence says about blue-blocking products

A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 randomized trials found that blue-light filtering spectacle lenses probably made little or no short-term difference to computer-related eye strain; sleep effects were uncertain, and the studies did not establish retinal protection. A practical evening sequence is to lower excessive room and screen brightness, choose a comfortable setting, stop color-critical work, and reduce stimulating screen use as bedtime approaches. This is a routine suggestion, not a guaranteed health outcome.

Run a one-week comfort experiment

Change one variable at a time so you can learn what helps. At the end of each work block, record dryness, ache, blur, headache, and neck discomfort from 0–10.

  1. Days 1–2: adjust text size, display distance, and glare only.
  2. Days 3–4: add distance/blink breaks.
  3. Days 5–7: add an evening warmth schedule.

If symptoms improve before warmth is added, that is useful information. If they persist despite a sensible setup, arrange a comprehensive eye exam and bring notes about timing, tasks, contact lenses, medications, and whether symptoms occur away from screens.

When to book routine care

Schedule an eye-care visit when symptoms recur, interfere with work, require frequent rubbing or drops, or are accompanied by persistent blur or headaches. A current refraction, binocular-vision assessment, dry-eye evaluation, and discussion of workplace demands can reveal treatable causes that software cannot.
