Frequently asked
What is Groundwell?
Groundwell is an educational outdoor / grounding tracker. It helps you find parks, trails, and other outdoor places near you, time your grounding sessions, and see the live environmental conditions of the land you're standing on (weather, soil moisture, UV, air quality, geomagnetic Kp).
Is this a medical app?
No. Groundwell describes environmental conditions, not your body. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Consult a healthcare provider for any health concern.
What is the "Your Area Grounding Score"?
A computed estimate of how favorable the conditions near you are for electrical contact with the ground, based on public weather and soil-moisture data. It is not a measurement of your body and not a medical metric.
What are Earth Connectivity Points (ECP)?
A progression system that rewards time spent outside. ECP scales with the surface you grounded on, how moist it was, the size of your skin contact area, and the local environmental conditions. The formula and reference values are documented in the in-app "What are Earth Connectivity Points?" sheet.
Why does the app ask for my location?
To show real parks, trails, and beaches near you (queried from OpenStreetMap) and to fetch live weather + soil conditions for your area. Your coordinates never leave the device for storage — we have no servers to send them to.
Where does the weather and soil data come from?
- Weather + soil moisture + UV → Open-Meteo (open public API)
- Air quality → Open-Meteo Air Quality
- Geomagnetic Kp → NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center
- Nearby places → OpenStreetMap via the Overpass API
- Map tiles → Carto, © OpenStreetMap contributors
Where is my data stored?
On your device, in local app storage. There is no cloud account, no backup, no sync. If you delete the app, your data is gone.
How do I change my city?
Tap the city name at the top of the Home tab. A picker opens with a search field and the option to "Use current location".
Why is the Kp index sometimes missing?
NOAA's public feed occasionally fails or returns an unusual shape. The app shows "—" in that case and tries again on the next refresh.
Will you ever add an account, leaderboard, or social features?
Maybe, but only as opt-in features and only after we publish a privacy policy update explaining exactly what would be shared. Today, the app is single-device.
